GFI Highlights Report

Establishing a strong foundation for long-term impact

Transforming food systems will require breaking down barriers between researchers and practitioners. Since our official launch in May 2023, GFI has worked across disciplines and sectors to position the Institute as a national leader in the food systems space—driving conversations, informing policy, and inspiring the next generation of food system leaders to make their mark. In a short time, the Institute has captured the attention of funders, policymakers, and luminaries in the food arena, igniting conversations and actions around our foundational pillars of Policy, Innovation, and Humanity.

Guided by our belief in food’s power to change the world, GFI is turning bold ideas into action. This report shares some early milestones—from launching a Food Leadership Minor at GW to forging cross-sector partnerships—while lifting up the voices of faculty, students, and collaborators who make it all possible. This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to build on this momentum in the years ahead.

"Through GFI’s Food Leadership minor, students will delve into the rich, complex narrative of our food system—uncovering how past choices have shaped today’s climate and sustainability challenges. They’ll be empowered to reimagine food’s role in shaping a more just, resilient, and equitable future—and they’ll leave with a profound understanding of food as the thread connecting people, communities, and the planet."
